Air conditioner condenser fins or coils The fins on many A/C condenser units get bent over time and the A/C units still work well. Heavily bent or damaged ones restrict the air flow or may affect the efficiency of the unit, although many of these units keep on functioning and cooling.
The air from the fan motor passes across these fins, taking the heat away in the air. The refrigerant cools down, and then goes to the evaporator coil in the other part of the air conditioning system. If the fins are damaged, this heat transfer becomes inefficient. The system has to work harder to compensate.
Aug 13, 2012· With normal use air conditioner fins can also get clogged with dirt and debris. When condenser fins or evaporator fins are bent or when they get clogged it causes a major restriction in air flow that would usually pass through the air conditioning system, which means a decrease in efficiency for the entire AC.
The condenser coil can be replaced. This would be the aluminum fins and the tubing inside they are attached to. If you have a split system, condenser unit outside and furnace inside, you can also replace the outside unit without replacing the furnace and evaporator coil that is inside the house.
Spray the fins using moderate water pressure from a hose nozzle. Direct the spray from the inside out. Reinstall the fan. Clean your outdoor unit on a day that's at least 60 degrees F. That's about the minimum temperature at which you can test your air conditioner servicing to make sure it's working.
How to Repair Bent Air Conditioner Compressor Fins. If the fins on your AC are bent: Slightly Bent Fins: Run a stiff, plastic, bristle brush back and forth to straighten fins that are partially bent. Badly Bent Fins: Use a putty knife to straighten badly bent fins, being careful not to break or damage the fins.
Jun 24, 2016· Cleaning Your AC Condenser Unit. A single year's worth of dirt and debris can clog your cooling fins and prevent the system from working properly. While some air conditioning problems – like coolant leaks – need to be repaired by professionals, a dirty air conditioner condenser is something that you can usually take care of yourself.
